Description:

First described under the name Guarapucu by Marcgrave, in Hist. Brazil, ,1648, p. 178; but this is not recognized under ICZN rules because it was published before 1757. Present-day taxonomists credit Cuvier with the priority description of this species under the name Cybium cavalla in his Regne Animal, ed. 2, II. 1829, p. 200.
