Description:Southern Resident killer whales (SRKWs) were listed as an endangered species in 2005. This triggered the requirement for a recovery plan that was released in 2008. Extensive biological studies are focused on determining the causes for the decline of the killer whales and how to conserve and recover the population. Being a charismatic megafauna, a focal point of tourism in aquariums and parks such as SeaWorld, as well as the subject of a series of films, killer whales have become a main attraction for marine viewing. SRKWs occupy a unique geographic area in Greater Puget Sound for part of the year. As a result, an extensive tourism industry has developed. This industry aims to provide SRKW viewing opportunities to the public. While the industry provides tourism opportunities to view the whales, evidence indicates some characteristics of the industry may be risk factors for the SRKW. While biological scientists study the biological issues surrounding the SRKW, this study considers the industry and the people who make up the industry in order to gain a better understanding of the ecosystem that surrounds the SRKW.
