  • Description:
Farming the Black-lip pearl oyster ("Pinctada margaritifera") to produce pearls has been a viable industry in the tropical Pacific region since 1976. A steady supply of young pearl oysters (spat) is needed to keep a farm in operation. Spat collection, the process of attracting larval pearl oysters onto artificial substrates, is commonly used in the pearling industry because it is cheap and simple. This article describes in detail the process of spat collection from construction of collectors to harvest. The authors give instructions for assembling various types of collectors, placing and maintaining collectors, and identifying and harvesting pearl oyster spat.
