Description:This booklet serves as an important resource for homeowners, buyers, builders, developers, engineers, regulators, realtors, appraisers, lenders and other persons influencing coastal development along the Great Lakes. The booklet begins with a brief description of the natural processes that affect the coast and coastal structures. The next section explains how to protect coastal investments, foremost by avoiding natural damage in the first place, but also by using shore protection methods that work over the long term. Such measures include restoration of natural shorelines and moderation of erosion. Various techniques are described here. The third major section discusses risk management and the economics of protecting coastal structures. The information provided is relevant not only to residential buildings, but to recreational, commercial, and industrial structures as well.
