Description:The zebra mussel, "Dreissena polymorpha," and quagga mussel, "Dreissena bugensis," are biofouling electric power generation plants; industrial, municipal, and private residential water intakes; and navigation, irrigation, and water distribution canals throughout the eastern half of North America. Their presence is causing damage worth hundreds of millions of dollars. This bulletin covers the effects zebra mussels can have on unprotected water systems and describes control alternatives, including physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological methods.
