  • Description:
During the 1971-72 grant year, the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Program undertook a major re-examination of its research objectives. From a comprehensive and penetrating study, seven sub-programs emerged, each directed toward a specific problem or management need of the Great Lakes. These sub-programs will form the primary framework for the University-wide Sea Grant Program for the next three to five years. This program framework was based on two main criteria. First, the sub-program had to respond to a clearly perceived and important Great Lakes problem or opportunity and, second, a reasonably strong capability to deal with the problem had to exist within the University. Over 100 specific problems were ranked in order of importance and from this list, the following sub-programs were constructed: Biological Resources and Microcontaminants, Geo-environmental and Mineral Resources, Electric Power Generation, Water Quality, Green Bay Region, Ports and Commerce, and Policy Studies. In 1971-72, the Sea Grant Program grew in size. We have added on two new campuses-UW-Oshkosh and UW-Superior.
