Description:In fisheries management, it is at least as important to manage the people fishing as it is to manage the fish. This summary provides characteristics and views of the sport anglers who use Ohio's Lake Erie fishery, and compares anglers from 1987 and 1981-1982. Private-boat anglers during 1987 made an average of 20.7 trips to Ohio's Lake Erie for angling; more trips were made to Central Basin sites, but anglers stayed longer and traveled farther for Western Basin sites. More than half reported their trips lasted one-and-one-half days or less. The mean age of the anglers is 46; mean income is $37,000; a trip is usually made by two or three people; and mean expenditure per person per angling day was $25.69. Good angling quality and enjoying time with family and friends are cited by anglers as main attractions to Lake Erie.
