Description:This plan was developed at the request of Dr. Jay Barton, President of the University of Alaska. It contains the recommendations of a state wide Fisheries Planning Committee for an increased effort in FISHERIES AND FISHERY-RELATED MARINE AFFAIRS at the University. The plan is organized to provide the reader with a clear understanding of the need for fisheries and marine-related education and research at the University by addressing the many-faceted fisheries and marine issues in Alaska, and then defining specific programs designed to meet these critical issues. Summary: A fisheries planning committee was formed under the auspices of University of Alaska President Jay Barton, and met several times to address the fisheries programs of the University. For this report the committee identified broad categories of needs of the fishing and fisheries related marine industries and has suggested that the University can play an active role in helping the state and the industry by combining designated fisheries education, research and extension programs into the University's response to these needs.
