Description:Part II available in the Supporting Files.
A major inlet of the sea, Long Island Sound is one of the nation's important resources. The large population surrounding the Sound places a heavy stress upon its waters and threatens its preservation. Investigations of heavy metal wastes in Long Island Sound are reported for the first year of effort of a longer term program. Heavy metals introduced into coastal waters represent a potential environmental hazard. The study consists of five integrated research projects with the objective of determining budgets of these wastes. The projects concern the fates and concentrations of heavy metals in the water column, the concentrations and effects of these metals in oysters, the water circulation patterns which control water renewal times and flushing rates, the structure and motion of the outflow of the Connecticut River into the Sound, and the transport of suspended materials in the Sound. Emphasis during this first year was on the eastern Sound. The research program has involved collecting data aboard ship in the Sound, establishing and monitoring oysters at control stations, making laboratory analyses and developing needed new analytical techniques, reducing data, and designing and constructing new field instrumentation
