Description:The southwestern basin of Lake Michigan has been subjected to extreme stresses because of its close proximity to large population centers. Effective management requires a clear understanding of the longshore transport processes. However, very little solid data and information are available on the actual magnitude, duration, and direction of longshore currents within the southwestern basin. This report summarizes the current velocity data collected in Lake Michigan near Wilmette Harbor in 1989 and near the site of 8,000-year-old tree stumps in 1990. At the Wilmette Harbor site, data on suspended sediment and bed materials were also collected.
