Description:At the end of October 1987, Onslow Bay shelf waters became infested with a yellow-green organism named "Ptychodiscus brevis", a red tide dinoflagellate. Red tides, common to many coastal states, previously had been unknown in North Carolina waters. Because the dinoflagellate was accompanied by a blue-green alga indigenous to subtropical waters, scientists inferred that the dinoflagellate was transported to North Carolina from the south. The most plausible theory of how the phenomenon occurred is based on a particular sequence of marine hydrodynamic conditions. The occurrence of a high pressure system over the northern Gulf of Mexico coupled with dinoflagellate outbreaks on the south Florida Gulf coast appears to be essential to red tide outbreaks on North Carolina coasts.
