Description:When the 89th Congress passed the National Sea Grant College and Program Act of 1966, it created the first federal program mandated to support activity across the full spectrum of the marine sciences. The Sea Grant network has now grown to emcompass more than 200 universities and other marine organizations that work within a core of 29 Sea Grant Colleges and institutions. This publication was produced by the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, whic is cooperatively supported by the state of South Carolina and by the U.S. Department of Commerce, NOAA/OAR/Sea Grant. This report is a compendium of some of Sea Grant's significant accomplishments during 1996-1997. The emphasis is on how Sea Grant utilizes the best available academic talent at the local and regional levels to help address national priorities with impacts that exceed its budgetary size. As it enters its fourth decade, Sea Grant continues to seek productive new avenues to promote the wise use of the nation's ocean and Great Lakes resources which are so central to our health and prosperity.
