Description:Reports on the use of midwater fish aggregating devices (FADs) have generally indicated a doubling or tripling of catches in pelagic waters, but FADs have not been tried in nearshore environments, for example, off piers. Preliminary experiments in this environment are described; results were mixed. The FADs attracted bait fish, but didn't improve fishing success at the pier. However the FADs withstood the environment and there was little opportunity to experiment with their configuration, which for the study case was probably too distant from the piers.
