  • Description:
Wetlands preservation...fishing rights and regulations...municipal sewage treatment costs...toxic substances in trout...tourism and energy shortages...the Great Lakes present a myriad of difficulties for citizens and public officials throughout the Midwest. Sea Grant Programs in New York, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota are tackling these problems with research, advisory services and education as their tools. Unlike other university-associated programs, Sea Grant research is explicitly designed to meet problems in the community. In this report, we have summarized Sea Grant efforts throughout the Great Lakes. These Sea Grant Programs have formed a talent-sharing Great Lakes Sea Grant Network. The Network makes the strengths of one program available throughout the region, and avoids duplication of efforts.
