Description:Undesirable materials in wastewater must be removed or rendered harmless before the water is returned to our waterways. Methane, a valuable gas, can be produced from wastes and biomass by digestion, a biological process that occurs under anaerobic conditions in the presence of microorganisms. In this process, light hydrocarbon gases are produced from the organic compounds in the wastewater. The major goal of this student project was to develop a system by which the organic content of the wastewater was reduced substantially, while producing a significant amount of methane. A secondary goal included scale-up projections of what a full-scale plant like this would be like, including operating costs.
