Description:Forty non-indigenous plants and animals are found in the ponds, rivers, and bay waters of Delaware. Some have become a significant environmental concern. Among those species addressed in this report are "Hydrilla verricillata", an aquatic weed widely used as an aquarium plant; Asian clams; green crabs; purple loosestrife; and Asian tiger mosquitoes. This report reviews the history and ecological impacts of non-indigenous species, common pathways of introduction, and current regulatory controls in Delaware and other states. Guidelines for developing an effective non-indigenous species policy for Delaware are suggested.
