Description:The floating fish trap fishery in Rhode Island has occasionally been controversial. As also experienced in other parts of the country, conflicts easily arise between operators of vessels and of stationary gear. The fish trap fishery is, however, a significant part of the Rhode Island fishing industry with an ex-vessel value of three-quarters of a million dollars and a total contribution to the state' s economy significantly more than that. Further, this industry employs the kind of labor which otherwise would be hardpressed to find employment. Conflicts between fish trap operators, yachtsmen and sports fishermen could be reduced if the laws and regulations governing fish traps were well publicized and enforced. This would be in the interest of the fish trap industry in the long run and would help to prevent potentially expensive settlements of conflicts in the courts.
