    The conference was a forum for the dissemination of new information resulting from current research into the biology, impact, and control of the zebra mussel ("Dreissena polymorpha") in North American waters, and a means of enhancing international cooperation and coordination in research on the zebra mussel. Abstracts of all papers given at the conference are included in the proceedings, grouped into the following areas: biology, physiology, behavior, population dynamics; ecosystem effects, fishery impacts, nutrient/contam​inant cycles, predator/prey interactions; mechanisms and rate of spread, range expansion, monitoring; biological control/mitigat​ion, exploitation/be​neficial uses; physical control/mitigat​ion; and chemical control/mitigat​ion. In addition, abstracts are given for the keynote presentations, case studies on zebra mussel control in public drinking water facilities, and the poster session.
