Description:Many of the people responsible for studying and managing fishery resources on the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) are unfamiliar with larval fish identification and ecology. This guide includes the larval fish most common to the river and provides quick, accessible information for easy use in the field. It is useful for identifying and studying larval fish in both the UMR and similar river systems. The book contains six sections, including one with methods of identification, definitions, and tables. Another illustrates typical species of 15 families. The largest section contains descriptions of selected larval fishes; information is provided on preferred habitats and distribution, spawning, egg and larval characteristics, and meristic counts for juveniles and adults. A 22-page bibliography is included.
