Description:Because of the substrate, enormous tidal range, and varying climate, the Bay of Fundy and the coast of Maine have some of the most productive macroalgae crops in the world. Seaweeds have been harvested for food, fertilizer, and medicinal and industrial uses for hundreds of years. This report surveys the current size, character, and economic value of the state's macroalgae industry and forecasts its future direction. Algal species suitable for culturing are identified and markets are evaluated for high unit price and large market volume.
