Description:Small commercial fishing boats generally have been ignored in the context of managinrg the New England fishing fleet. This report, based on a study conducted from 1979 to 1981, describes the small-scale sector of the Southern New England (Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut) fleet. The physical characteristics of the fleet, distributions of fishing patterns by species, geographical areas and seasons, social and occupational characteristics of small-scale fishermen, the economic structure of small-scale fishing, and management implications of this information and analysis are included here.
