Description:Many factors have influenced the economic well-being and competitiveness of rural communities throughout Louisiana. The most significant element is that the agricultural, fisheries, oil and gas production and manufacturing sectors, the traditional sources of jobs and income for the state's rural regions, suffered severely during the 1980s. During that same decade, the state's communities were also greatly affected by the reduction in revenues that flowed to them from federal and state sources. The resulting social and economic disruptions prompted many Louisiana rural communities to seriously consider economic growth alternatives.
