Description:Poor quality has often been cited as a major obstacle to increased sales of U.S. fish. In a report for the 1984 New England Governors' Conference, the absence of quality standards was cited as a major reason for diminished economic returns to fishermen. Subsequent studies have all shown a strong need for vessel operators and buyers to initiate quality control procedures. This report summarizes a feasibility study of implementing quality control procedures for underutilized mid-Atlantic species, chosen because inconsistent quality is thought to have prevented increases in their sales. (Species discussed include mackerel, scup, bluefish, croaker, and squid.) It is concluded that quality control would pay for itself, but only if there is a discerning consumer market, and more consistent standards for defining premium grades.
