Description:n the Rhode Island coastal communities of Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth, suburban sprawl is consuming Aquidneck Island's natural resources at an alarming rate. Most new development is occurring on once-productive farmland and critical habitats. The Aquidneck Island Partnership is a collaborative effort of local organizations committed to promoting environmental conservation that is compatible with a healthy economy. The need is urgent for coordinated strategic action among the various groups responsible for acquiring and managing Aquidneck Island land. It is expected that this study will assist the Aquidneck Island Partnership and other residents to implement wise growth management and to plan for a more sustainable future.
