Description:There is demand for high quality octopus as halibut bait, a demand that has been met largely by Japanese octopus suppliers. Many Alaska fishermen who are catching octopus incidentally could increase that catch and earn extra income by selling octopus as halibut bait. This report provides information on fishing economics and techniques for the giant Pacific octopus, and suggests that a supplemental octopus fishery could become valuable with some effort invested in developing the market and harvesting techniques.
