Description:This booklet presents issues and options in bluff stability problems for the current or prospective shoreline property owner, as well as community officials, agricultural landowners, park managers, and shore cornmunity residents. Natural forces (erosion) and human activities which contribute to bluff instability are defined. While instructions for construction of protective devices are not included, interventions which could enhance bluff stability are suggested. Land use conntrols, protection against wave attack, reshaping the bluff face, subsurface drainage, surfare water control, and vegetation planting are explored, along with examples and case studies. A guide for assessing property is offered, and an extensive list of resources for professional help and additional annotated reading material are provided.
