Description:Understanding the actual causes of an apparent world-wide decline in the health of coral reefs, according to experts gathered at a 1991 workshop, requires a scientifically based, internationally coordinated, long-range monitoring program. Although coral 'bleaching' occurs in many parts of the world, whether or not this serves as a sign of global warming remains in question; a systematic monitoring effort offers the best hope of understanding the causes of bleaching and other stress responses of corals. The most immediate concerns, according to workshop participants, stemmed from regional anthropogenic sources the results of human population growth, land use, resource exploitation and waste disposal. This report helps to lay the foundation for a strong international and interdisciplinary research effort.
