Description:This report is a summary of a workshop on shellfish disease issues of current concern to the shellfishing industry of the northeastern U.S. The workshop's principal aim was to keep the shellfishing community abreast of the latest information on diseases of importance to wild and cultured shellfish stocks in the area. Topics addressed by invited speakers included MSX oyster disease, which has recently caused a high incidence of oyster mortality at one location on Cape Cod; tumors of soft-shell clams; `brown tide', a new problem with recent dramatic effects on scallops in New York and mussels in Rhode Island; and shellfish hatcheries and shellfish importation in relation to disease concerns.
