Description:This book is the proceedings of a March 1994 `self assessment' meeting of experts on oil spill prevention, response, and oversight. Conference participants looked at the many local, state, U.S., and international accomplishments since 1989. The book has 30 contributions, as well as summaries of open discussions. Reports include a decision-making model to evaluate oil spill contingency plans, resistance to grounding by single and double-hull tankers, how to protect ecotourism resources in the event of an oil spill, and technology protocols for spill response that are appropriate for Alaska. Although progress has been made in many areas, it was concluded that ship personnel training and testing could use improvement, the U.S. ocean transport system needs to be reexamined, we should reconsider some cleanup technologies, and prevention should be the top priority.
