Description:The role of habitat fragmentation (changes in patch size and shape) on ecological processes of seagrass meadows is poorly understood. This research used a mesocosm approach to examine the roles that habitat fragmentation and trophic structure play on predation and habitat selection. An experimental 'ecosystem' consisted of juvenile red drum (predator), juvenile pinfish (both predator and prey), and grass shrimp (prey), common in the northern Gulf of Mexico. In four different artificial seagrass habitats, varying in size and shape, pinfish predation and grass shrimp predation were measured. Habitat selection by each of the three species was measured individually, and in the presence of every other combination thereof.
