Description:"This manuscript provides a brief description of the two species of pilot whales (long-finned pilot whales, Globicephala melas (previously known as G. melaena), and the short-finned pilot whale (G. macrorhynchus), found in the North Atlantic Ocean . It then lists scientific publications relating to the biology, behavior, conservation and management, most of which were published from 1939 to present. This document focuses primarily on published literature on the distribution and abundance of the two species throughout the North Atlantic Ocean. Literature on long-finned pilot whales and short-finned pilot whales from other geographic regions is also included, as readers may gain insight into the research methodologies and findings of other stocks and populations of these two species. Unpublished articles or popular books are generally excluded, unless these contain important information not available elsewhere"--Abstract.
