Description:In July 1989, a new Model Output Statistics (MOS) (Glahn and Lowry, 1972) package based on the Nested Grid Model (NGM) (Phillips, 1979) was implemented to produce forecasts for maximum/minimum temperature (max/min), probability of precipitation (PoP), cloud amount, and surface wind (Jacks et al.. 1990). This NGM MOS guidance replaced the NGM-based perfect prog guidance that had been operational since May 1987, but did not affect the existing LFM MOS guidance. We have hypothesized that the NGM MOS max/min temperature and PoP guidance may perform better than the corresponding LFM MOS guidance during shallow cold air events because the NGM has greater vertical resolution than the LFM. We performed the case study described in this paper to test this hypothesis.
