Description:On July 21, 1987, a line of severe thunderstorms developed in eastern Idaho and moved into extreme western Wyoming. As the storms moved eastward through the Teton Wilderness, nearly 15,000 acres of trees were blown down and badly frightened and temporarily isolated several parties of recreationalists and Forest Service personnel. The purpose of this brief discussion is to highlight the major synoptic features associated with this event and to document the resulting damage. The potential for damaging thunderstorms in the northern Rocky Mountains cannot be understated and deserves critical attention by operational forecasters. Far too often the spectacular events spawned by thunderstorms in the Central Plains draw more attention by the media and in the literature, but the intermountain thunderstorm clearly is capable of producing extensive damage as this case documents.
