Description:In this, the second in a series of Technical Attachments on how to use Model Output Statistics (MOS) effectively, I will discuss the MOS probability of snow amount (PoSA) guidance. Probability forecasts are provided for three snow amount categories which are then converted to one of four possible categorical forecasts: less than 2, 2 or 3, 4 or 5, and greater than 6 inches of snow. As in Part I, this discussion will generally address problems that arise with MOS forecasts even when the LFM is performing reasonably well because these problems are difficult to diagnose.
