Description:With the installation of SWIS (Satellite Weather Interpretation System) in forecast offices, there will be a re-emphasis on the use of satellite imagery in forecasting and nowcasting the weather.
Many forecasters have now had over a decade of experience using GOES imagery and viewing weather systems from the top down in the infrared and visible spectral wavelengths. The use of satellite pictures has become routine. Perhaps because of their continual availability, we may tend to take them at face value rather than spend a moment to study what it is we are actually seeing (or not seeing).
With the introduction of SWIS, all sorts of goodies will be handed to the forecaster: animation, color enhancement, and direct comparison to AFOS generated graphics. Will this help us interpret satellite data? (I hope so.) Or will we be subject to even greater pitfalls? The answer lies in how well we know the basics and how well we can apply this understanding to the new technology.
