Description:Determining the magnitude of the beluga harvest during the population decline has been difficult because it was not possible to interview all hunters to obtain an accurate account of the whales landed or struck and lost. Although MMPA harvest reporting regulations enacted in 1994 improved monitoring and data collection, hunter participation is crucial to obtaining accurate take numbers. Here we review all existing data sources, including some that were not included in the Recovery Plan, to reevaluate harvest of beluga whales in Cook Inlet.
