Description:There are currently two subspecies of blue whales recognized in the Southern Hemisphere—the Antarctic blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus intermedia) and the pygmy blue whale (B. m. brevicauda) (Rice, 1998). Passive acoustic data have revealed the presence of both subspecies in New Zealand waters (Barlow et al., 2018; McDonald, 2006; Torres, 2013; Warren et al., 2021). Both subspecies are classified as “data-deficient” by the New Zealand Threat Classification system (Baker et al., 2019). The International Union for Conservation of Nature (Cetacean Specialist Group, 1996) has not yet evaluated the status of pygmy blue whales (Pollock, 2019) but considers Antarctic blue whales “critically endangered” (Cooke, 2018).
