Description:Lightning data obtained in 1983 from a network of three direction finders were studied to ascertain the diurnal development of space distributions of flash frequencies. The influence of the underlying topography and the resulting diurnal circulations on the time and place of lightning strokes was very apparent. In addition, the data showed that lightning is relatively rare, and exhibits a very large day-to-day variability. This study also emphasizes the utility of the type of data employed, to study the characteristics not only of lightning as such but also of topographically induced convection in general.
