Description:As a first step in developing an assay for the presence of carcinogenic compounds in Puget Sound, replicate samples of sediments from twenty stations in Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, Washington, were extracted and tested for mutagenic activity by standard salmonela bacterial testing (Ames Test). The results of the test, employing the unfractionated extracts (dicloromethane solvent extraction), were inconclusive. The whole extracts were sufficiently toxic to the bacteria to effectively mask any mutagenic activity. Further study is recommended to separate the toxins(s) and thus determine whether or not any extracted components are mutagenic.
