Description:Conventionally analyzed surface and upper-air data are reanalyzed, employing sub-synoptic analysis and enhancement techniques and discussed in detail. The potential of these procedures for improving short-range weather forecasts is shown through numerous examples that compare conventional and sub-synoptic analysis techniques. Some of these cases use analyses actually done in real time; others were analyzed after the fact, using techniques that are feasible for real-time situtations. Sub-synoptic analysis has been an integral part of my forecasting routine for several years, and I am firmly convinced that detailed diagnosis of the structure of the atmosphere can pay high dividends to both the forecaster and the user public. This Technical Memorandum is not a complete answer to operational problems posed by significant convective storms, but the case studies considered substantiate the value of intensive analysis procedures.
