Description:The present study is not intended to provide specific guidance with regard to the density and instrument mix of future atmospheric observing networks. It merely discusses possible refinements to the use of profiler data, which under certain conditions may make them more suitable for numerical prediction purposes. The specific issue we are addressing is whether the mismatch in vertical resolution between profiler wind and temperature data, which is a hindrance both in the diagnosis and prediction of mesoscale flow patterns, can be reduced by incorporating wind observations as variational constraints into the analysis of the temperature field.
