WSMR atmospheric structure constant (Cn2) survey

Details:

  • Description:
Between March 25 and April 5, 1977, a multi-sensor cooperative atmospheric survey was carried out at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. The Atmospheric Sciences Laboratory of WSMR conducted groundbased and rawinsonde measurements of the refractive index structure constant C2 (at heights of 8 and 32 meters on two meteorological towers), wind, temperature, humidity, and pressure. The Optical Propagation Group of the NOAA/ERL Wave Propagation Laboratory (Boulder, Colorado) carried out measurements of C2n using an aircraft-mounted temperature probe, including vertical profiles to 3000 meters above ground and constant altitude circuit surveys. The aircraft measurements and concurrent rawinsonde launches took place at approximately local midnight, dawn, noon, and sunset. This report describes and summarizes the aircraft measurements only.

The area surveyed is between Alamogordo and Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is illustrated in the accompanying map (Fig.l). The terrain is relatively flat with a mean altitude of approximately 1200 meters above sea level. The north-south ridge of the San Andres mountains, at an altitude of 2100-2400 meters, is 15 kilometers west of the center of the area. 32-meter meteorological towers are located at the sites denoted Apache and LSTC, which are 5.5 km apart. At the northern corner of the area is the dry lake, Lake Lucero, and the beginning of the White Sands National Monument.
