Description:We describe observations of winter storms made by remote sensors located in the Tushar Mountains of Utah during winter 1985. Remote sensors included a steerable, dual-channel microwave radiometer for measurement of water vapor and supercooled liquid water in clouds and a Ka-band radar for measurement of cloud properties and the mesoscale wind field. The observations are discussed from two aspects: the case study in which all available data for two storms are examined in detail, and the aggregate study in which the general behavior of supercooled liquid water is considered based upon the entire data set. A new method is presented for the calculation of water vapor flux from a combination of wind profiles measured by the radar and water vapor density profiles measured by the microwave radiometer.
