Description:A testbed fixture has been built to investigate some of the performance characteristics of a proposed rapid precision leveling system concept. The conceptual system uses a reflection of a portion of the transmitted beam in order to correct for the effects of uniform refraction. Operation of the fixture revealed that the concept is extremely sensitive to miscollimation of the beams and is sensitive to detector dark current noise. It was also observed that turbulence induced angular fluctuations at the two ends of the propagation path were highly correlated, suggesting that it might be possible to treat turbulence induced beam bending and refraction in the same manner.
