Description:The FORTRAN library that the NOAA Wave Propagation Laboratory (WPL) developed to perform radiative transfer calculations for an upward-looking microwave radiometer is described.: Although the theory and algorithms have been used for many years in WPL radiometer research, the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) software has combined them into a toolbox that is portable, readable, application independent, and easy to update. RTE has been optimized for the UNIX environment. However, the FORTRAN source code can be compiled on any platform that provides a Standard FORTRAN 77 compiler. RTE allows a user to do cloud modeling, calibrate radiometers, simulate hypothetical radiometer systems, develop retrieval techniques, and compute weighting functions. The radiative transfer model used is valid for channel frequencies below 1000 GHz in clear conditions and for frequencies below 100 GHz when clouds are present.
