Description:Two years of cloud-to-ground lightning strike data from the Bureau of Land Management's Automatic Lightning Detection System are used to develop a preliminary thunderstorm climatology for the State of Idaho. The preliminary results suggest earlier climatologies based on widely separated weather observing stations underestimate the number of thunderstorm days in the region. Map types are then used to investigate the variations in the frequency of lightning under differing mid-tropospheric flow patterns. Finally, manually reported lightning activity levels are compared to lightning occurrence and density as measured by the automated system.
