Description:Program ALEMBIC is a general purpose program that was designed to aid forecasters in the transition from preparing observations and forecasts in teletypewriter (TTY) format, specifically for entry to the Federal Aviation Administration's Weather Message Switching Center (WMSC), to preparing the, same messages in a format for transmission on the National Weather Service s Automation of Field Operations and Services (AFOS). Observations and forecasts composed with TTY formats as CCCWRKXXX products can be used directly as input to paper tape punch routines or as input to ALEMBIC. In addition, once the transition is complete, forecasters who are accustomed to preparing their products in bulletin form may use ALEMBIC to separate and transmit individual messages on the AFOS system as an alternative to the MPL feature of the AFOS foreground software. According to definition two of Webster's New World Dictionary, Second College Edition, 1974, ALEMBIC means "anything that refines or purifies." For t.his name, the author is grateful to Lieutenant J. E. Kerr, USN, who wrote a program with similar function at Fleet Weather Central Rota, Spain, in 1969.The basis of both programs is that all extraneous characters are removed and all message headers are entered before the final products are transmitted.
