Description:Vessel strikes, entanglement, poaching, intentional harassment, and invasive research are among many possible threats to Alaska’s endangered Cook
Inlet beluga whales (CIBW), Delphinapterus leucas, according to the Recovery Plan (NMFS1) for this population. Geographically and genetically
isolated from other beluga populations around Alaska, the CIBW population is listed as an “endangered” Distinct Population Segment (DPS) by NOAA’s
National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the Federal agency responsible for its protection.
