Description:This comprehensive series of wholesale market profiles examines federally managed groundfish and crab species caught in Alaska commercial fisheries. Each profile summarizes the fishery and provides in-depth information on wholesale production volume and value, product mix, supply chain, competing supply, and key markets. Alaska’s commercial fisheries are the most productive in the Nation, accounting for 61 percent of total 2017 U.S. commercial fishery harvest volume. In 2017, Alaska’s wholesale production of 1.35 million metric tons (mt) of seafood products was valued at $4.86 billion.1 Of this, the majority was exported, with overall exports estimated at 1.12 million mt valued at $3.45 billion.2 The groundfish and crab species covered in this report represent 73 and 60 percent of the state’s production volume and value, respectively (based on 2017 data). Alaska pollock is by far the most plentiful and most valuable of Alaska’s groundfish species.
