Description:The Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) has annually completed a bottom longline survey in Alaska since 1978. The survey samples demersal waters of the upper continental slope and is primarily designed to assess the sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) stock, although several other groundfish species are caught in significant numbers. In 2019, the 42nd annual longline survey sampled stations in the eastern Bering Sea region and the Gulf of Alaska. The primary objectives of the survey were to determine 1) the relative abundance of groundfish species through a standardized longline survey, 2) the age composition of sablefish through otolith collection, and 3) movement patterns of selected groundfish species through a tag and release program.
